The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has convened over 20,000 delegates at Kololo Independence Grounds today, Monday, for the first meeting of its 5th National Conference of special interest groups. The conference will see the ruling party go to the polls to elect leaders for its various leagues ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The NRM’s special interest groups include the Women’s League, Youth League, Persons with Disabilities League, Elders League, Workers League, Entrepreneurs League, Diaspora League, Historical Leaders Forum, and the Veterans League.
The conference commenced with a keynote address by NRM national chairman, President Yoweri Museveni, who is expected to officially open the event before delegates break into their respective group meetings to conduct elections.
Delegates attending the conference include top party leadership such as the national chairperson, vice chairpersons, regional leaders from all six regions, NRM Members of Parliament, East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) representatives, party flag bearers, and district chairpersons. Also in attendance are members of the party’s diaspora branches, historical leaders forum, and executive committees of the various special interest organs. Additional participants include city and municipal division leaders, sub-county and town council representatives, and up to 20 individuals handpicked by the national chairman as observers.
Monday’s conference serves as a precursor to the national delegates conference scheduled for Thursday, which will formally usher the ruling party into the 2026 general election season.
